What is Emotive Learning?

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

Learning new material is not always easy, but it is essential to surviving in today's information age. Further, each person has unique preferences when it comes to learning. Take Jane, Joe and Ann, three different people with different learning styles.

Jane, a visual learner, prefers visual aids and gets bored with lengthy text and explanations. She prefers to see the whole picture first, and then explore the details in small chunks, at her own pace. Without visual aids, she gets bored and disengaged.

Joe, on the other hand, prefers to have an organized, detail plan. He gets confused and anxious when dealing with uncertainty. He gets easily frustrated when he is not able to control the pace and amount of content delivery.

Ann likes to do hands on activities to reinforce the concepts of a lesson. She likes to exercises, puzzles and quizzes. She also likes to go over the concepts with a peer, by explaining them or listening to her peer explain concepts to her. With no one to talk to, Ann feels isolated and is easily distracted by her cell phone.

But, do Jane, Joe, or Ann even know their learning preferences? Are they aware of the impact their emotional state has on their learning outcomes? What if they were able to assess their emotional state in real time, and then use that information to adjust their learning strategies and environment to improve their performance?

What if you, as a teacher were able to assess the emotional state of a classroom when you are teaching a lesson and then use that information to adjust the lesson to maximize student performance? For example, a bored class could indicate to you that it's time for a break or a more fun, challenging activity.

In practice, it is difficult for a teacher to assess each individual student's emotion while teaching, let alone the emotions of hundreds of students. Even individuals may not be aware of how his or her own emotional state impacts their learning experience.

Emotive computing platform enables teachers and students to identify emotions in the classroom, and then use this information to personalize learning to improve a student's performance. The platform provides an emotive assessment tool, that can be easily adapted into any curriculum using any mobile device.
